FAQ

We Have The Answers

Why should I see an orthodontist for braces instead of my general dentist?

Orthodontists are specialists trained to address complex tooth movement, alignment, and jaw growth. After completing dental school, orthodontists undergo an additional 2-3 years of post-graduate training in orthodontics. This specialized education ensures they stay current on the latest practices, innovations, and research. Choosing an orthodontist means you’re receiving care from someone dedicated to the most effective solutions for your smile.

Do I need a dentist referral?

No, a referral is not necessary! While dentists may refer patients, anyone looking to improve their smile can schedule a consultation directly with an orthodontist.

Can I just wear a retainer to move my teeth?

Retainers are an essential part of orthodontic treatment, but they are used after the teeth are aligned. They help keep your teeth in their new position. To move and align teeth, braces or Invisalign are required.

Can I still play sports while wearing braces?

Yes, you can! We recommend using a mouth guard to protect your teeth and braces. Over-the-counter mouth guards can be molded to fit your teeth, or you can opt for custom-made guards from a general dentist.

Can I refer my friends for a consultation?

Absolutely! We love welcoming friends of our patients to our practice and are happy to offer them a consultation.

Do I still need to see my dentist during orthodontic treatment?

Yes, your dentist plays a vital role in your overall dental health. While your orthodontist focuses on alignment, your dentist will continue to perform regular exams, cleanings, and address any additional dental needs like fillings or crowns.

Will insurance cover the full cost of treatment?

Insurance coverage varies by plan, but most dental insurance will cover a portion of orthodontic treatment costs. We will review your estimated coverage during your consultation to ensure you’re informed.

Do you bill insurance?

Yes, we handle insurance billing directly and accept direct payments as well. This is a convenient service we offer to our patients.

Do you offer payment plans or options?

We offer flexible payment options, including interest-free plans that fit most budgets. These plans are available to all patients, regardless of insurance coverage, and will be discussed during your consultation.

When should I schedule an appointment?

  • Children: The American Association of Orthodontists recommends scheduling an evaluation by age 7. Early evaluation can help prevent more complex treatments down the road, even if treatment doesn’t begin right away.
  • Adults: It’s never too late to start! Whether you’re interested in straightening your teeth for cosmetic reasons, need orthodontic adjustments for implants, or require surgical assistance, you can schedule a consultation at any age.

Will my child’s teeth straighten on their own?

Unfortunately, teeth don’t always grow into a straight position naturally. Factors like genetics, thumb sucking, and even allergies can affect how teeth develop. An early consultation ensures that your child’s growth is guided properly to create space and prevent crowding.

Do braces hurt?

Braces may cause some temporary discomfort, similar to muscle soreness after a workout. We recommend resuming your normal diet as soon as possible after adjustments to minimize soreness. Over-the-counter pain relief, such as Tylenol, can help alleviate discomfort.

Do you give shots?

No, routine orthodontic treatments do not require injections.

How long will my orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment time can range from 6 to 30 months, depending on your unique needs. We’ll discuss the expected timeline during your initial consultation. Staying on track with appointments and following care instructions will help ensure the best results.

Will I need to have teeth removed?

Each case is different. Some people may need teeth removed to create space for alignment, especially in cases of severe crowding. However, less than 10% of patients in our practice require tooth extractions due to our advanced treatment techniques.

When can I schedule appointments for myself or my child?

We offer flexible scheduling Monday through Friday. Certain appointments, such as appliance or braces placement, are generally scheduled in the morning. Regular adjustments are often preferred in the afternoon. We also offer early morning appointments starting at 7:30 AM and can see patients until 6 PM (5 PM on Fridays).

Can I return to work or school after getting appliances or braces?

Yes, you or your child can return to work or school after any procedure. While some soreness may occur, it typically does not interfere with daily activities.

How often will I have appointments?

Appointments are generally scheduled every 6-10 weeks for adjustments. Your next appointment will be scheduled before you leave the office to keep your treatment on track.

Can I still get braces if I have crowns, missing teeth, or baby teeth, even as an adult?

Yes! These concerns will be addressed during your consultation, and treatment will be customized to suit your unique dental needs.
